Benzene Exposure

Benzene is regulated by the EPA; in drinking water it is required to be below five parts per billion. It is also regulated by National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration; it is required that exposure during the workday be limited to one part per million. Long term Benzene exposure is considered to be exposure longer than one year. The largest group of people with Benzene-related leukemia were exposed to the carcinogenic chemical on the job. It is required that employers furnish employees with a hazard-free workplace. But in the case of Benzene, many employers have placed employees at high risk for inhaling or absorbing Benzene and have failed to protect them. Employers are supposed to provide workers with training and personal protective equipment including respiratory protection against Benzene inhalation. The material safety data sheet for Benzene states that the chemical is a confirmed carcinogen. It states that it is a possible mutagen and that it is not known if it is a teratogen (causes birth defects). It states that it may be a reproductive toxin for females. The MSDS also states that those who work with Benzene should have the following:

Many employees are not provided the proper training for working with Benzene and are not provided with adequate personal protection equipment. These employers may be found negligent if workers are exposed to Benzene and develop leukemia. If you suspect that you have been exposed to Benzene, you can undergo testing to be positive. Benzene tests can be conducted on the blood, urine or breath. However, these tests can only test for recent exposure.
